Annotated Summary

According to Wabale (2017), the study introduces the system of smart trolley that uses smartphone and Arduino to minimise customer’s queuing time for billing checkout. This system is beneficial to customers as it provides on spot scanning of the product with price details shown on LCD. The data from the LCD will then be transferred to the billing counter computer. Hence, saving time for the customer to perform check out. In addition, the system provides benefits to customers with a membership card which is also a RFID tag. Having said that, the normal trolley will become a smart trolley when the RID tag is being inserted to the RFID reader. Moreover, the system is cost efficient as this system requires less cost to design and less power supply . Thus, displaying the total amount to the user making it a user friendly system.

The proposed design integrates current technology with the existing shopping trolley. The top frame of the trolley includes a RFID scanner, powered by an attachable tablet. Items placed in the trolley will be automatically scanned and expenditures will be reflected on the tablet. The total bill is related to the self-checkout counter for payment. Features of the tablet include a search function to locate products and check for availability.

Besides inclusion of RFID, a membership system was implemented which allows the withdrawal of a fully charged battery from the main counter. However, this system and benefits are not applicable for non-members. Hence, non-members only use the trolley without the benefits.
